Former swimming baths set for residential conversion

A former Sheffield swimming pool could be converted to an apartment building if newly-submitted plans are given the go-ahead.Coda Planning, on behalf of a private applicant, has lodged a full planning application with Sheffield City Council for the redevelopment of Chapeltown Swimming Baths on Burncross Road.The application covers the demolition of the existing leisure centre buildings, which has already begun, and construction of a new building of between two and four storeys.The development would comprise 34 two-bedroom apartments and two one-bedroom units, as well as 39 car parking spaces and outdoor amenity space.The site is located in a predominantly residential area, with a care home, nursery and offices also located nearby.A planning statement submitted as part of the application said residential use was suitable for the site due to the nature of the area, and the proposed height “would not be detrimental to surrounding uses considering the existing building”.The Chapeltown Swimming Baths building was put up for sale in 2015, and closed in 2016, after it was deemed surplus to requirement due to the construction of a new facility in nearby High Green.
