Planning approval has been granted for a Humber green hydrogen production facility.Meld Energy announced last year that it had selected px Group’s Saltend Chemicals Park (SCP) as the site for the facility. The company submitted an outline planning application to East Riding of Yorkshire Council earlier this year for development on the Reedmere plot at the park.Hydrogen would be produced at the facility through an electrolysis process, which involves using electricity to split water (H2O) into its constituent elements. The hub would produce up to 100MW of ‘Green’ Hydrogen for use by businesses based at Saltend Chemicals Park.It could reduce the carbon footprint of the SCP site by 20 per cent and produce 13,400 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.It has been estimated that the development would support the creation of 400 jobs during construction and approximately nine roles during the operational phase. The council has now granted planning permission for the facility, subject to conditions, under delegated powers.A planning officer’s report accompanying the decision said: “The proposed hydrogen plant (B2 – general industry use) is an appropriate form of development which would be located on a key employment site.”The proposal would support the economy of the East Riding and the Humber sub-region and help to reduce the carbon emissions of SCP.”The proposed plant would provide essential energy infrastructure and create over 400 jobs during the construction and approximately nine jobs during the operational phase.”
