Green light for gas works development
A former Bristol gas works site which has been derelict for more than 40 years is set to be redeveloped after planning consent was granted for a residential scheme.Brandon Yard on Bristol’s harbourside contains ruins of two grade-II listed buildings, West Purifier House and Engine House. Both will be restored under the plans, together with the iconic chimney of Engine House.Applicants Square Bay and Acorn Property Group (Bristol) are proposing 58 residential units in the listed buildings and a new structure on the site.Financial contributions of £500,000 toward local infrastructure and nearly £400,000 to Bristol City Council’s affordable housing delivery budget will also be made.The scheme was designed by Bristol-based AWW architect, with GVA’s Bristol office acting as planning consultant. Community and stakeholder engagement was carried out by Bath-based Sulis Public Affairs.A number of unsuccessful attempts have previously been made to redevelop the site, with the most recent proposal by the Soil Association to develop a new headquarters.
