Green light for Goodyear homes scheme

The green light has been granted to plans to construct up to 230 homes on part of the old Goodyear tyre factory in Wolverhampton.St Modwen Developments is behind the application for the 19.3-acre site in Stafford Road and Bushbury Lane.Goodyear previously occupied 87.9 acres of land but now much of the northern part of the site has been redeveloped for housing, retail, leisure and community uses.The application site formed the southern part of the Goodyear site which closed in July 2017. The demolition of the buildings started earlier this year.The City of Wolverhampton Council’s planning committee made a final decision on the application at a meeting on Tuesday 11 September.In 2015 Goodyear announced it intended to close the plant after it became unprofitable.Before it closed, the plant produced rubber compounds for tyre factories overseas as well as retread tyres.The factory opened in 1927 and at its peak covered 88 acres, employed more than 7,000 staff and made tyres for cars, trucks, tractors and Formula 1 racing teams.
