Green light for Stockport Interchange
Plans for the multimillion-pound Stockport Interchange development – which will include a 17-storey tower, apartments and commercial space – have been backed.TfGM and Stockport Council are behind the application, which concerns the town’s Chestergate site.Proposed is the demolition of the existing bus interchange and the construction of a new facility, circa 62,500 sq ft, to include northern and southern concourse buildings and providing 14 bus stands and up to nine layover/coach bays.A mixed-use residential and commercial development is also lined up adjacent to the replacement interchange. This would comprise 17 storeys and include 23 car parking spaces. The retail space would cover 8,400 sq ft over five units, with 196 apartments across the upper 14 floors.Also proposed is a new area of public realm adjacent to the River Mersey and a public park.WSP is lead consultant on the scheme.
