Green light for student flats building on former Boots site
An application proposing the construction of a student living building rising to 17 storeys on a Nottingham site previously used by Boots has been green lit.Jensco Student Living brought forward proposals for the junction of Traffic Street and Wilford Road. The site has historically been used for industrial and commercial purposes since the 1880s. It was latterly occupied by a relatively low rise building known as Sentinel House, used by Boots as offices and a laboratory. This was demolished and cleared in 2008. The site is currently hoarded and in use as a construction compound and parking area associated with the development of adjoining sites on Traffic Street.Jensco’s scheme has been revised a number of times since being initially submitted in 2022.It now comprises a building rising to 17 storeys providing 396 bedrooms in a mix of studios and cluster flats. The lower ground, ground and first floors will accommodate communal facilities including a gym, cinema, private dining space, games area, amenity spaces, meeting rooms, a cycle store, laundry and waste storage facilities.A statement filed with Nottingham City Council on behalf of the applicant said: “The scheme presented here is a carefully designed proposal that seeks to establish a new landmark building on this significant site.”Detailed to a high standard, with appropriate scale, massing and proportions, the scheme will become a landmark gateway, setting a new precedent for the wider area and beyond, infilling the last remaining empty plot of land within the immediate area.”The council’s planning committee considered the application on 19 June.
