Green light to replace fire-hit Christie building

Plans to redevelop the fire-damaged Paterson Building at The Christie Withington have been officially approved.The original site accommodated a host of research activities into the likes of lung cancer, melanoma, drug discovery, leukaemia and radiotherapy.However, a fire in April 2017 forced the evacuation of the Paterson Building and the relocation of many of its scientists and equipment to Alderley Park in Cheshire. This has had a “significant impact” on research outcomes and is causing a number of operational and fiscal challenges.Following a review of available options, the project partners announced in May 2018 that the repair and refurbishment of the Paterson Building would not be viable and it would have to be demolished and replaced with a modern facility.Plans were revealed earlier in the year for a “world-class” replacement which could be operational by 2025.Those working on the project have identified the need for a 257,000 sq ft facility which would accommodate the laboratories, consultant workspaces, collaborative spaces and the associated plant, equipment and support uses. Those who moved to Alderley Edge would also be able to return.Once fully occupied, the ten-storey building would hold up to 965 employees who would support a total of 50 full-time jobs in the retail and leisure sectors. Of the total number, 240 positions will be additional to current activity.A total of 484 letters of support and 330 against the proposal were received, with Manchester City Council having granted approval.
