Harbour hub set for green light

Plans to transform a warehouse at Whitstable Harbour into a mixed-use development with space for business, bars, restaurants and museums are set to be approved.The plans for South Quay Shed on Harbour Street are being led by Canterbury City Council.The change of use application for has earmarked the site, currently used as fisherman’s storage, as a hub for retail, restaurants and bars, as well as leisure space featuring museums and space for exhibitions and educational use.Shipping containers will be arranged to create an inner courtyard, as well as creating a mezzanine level and terraced areas. The courtyard would comprise a food hall/event area.A planning statement said the scheme is important in “ensuring the harbour provides the appropriate facilities for the community to access and use, as well as providing opportunity for local business”.The proposals have been recommended for approval ahead of a Canterbury City Council planning meeting later today (18 September 2018).A document filed ahead of the meeting said the development “would contribute to the vitality and viability of the town centre and accords with aims of the Whitstable Harbour Strategic Plan”.
