The creation of more than 90 homes has been proposed for a former SJ Dixons site in Wolverhampton.Morro Partnerships is seeking the go-ahead for a residential development at Cleveland Road. The site, which extends to approximately 17 acres, comprises the locally listed SJ Dixons buildings, associated warehousing and cleared land on the corner of Hospital/Cleveland Road formerly home to the Newmarket Hotel and working mens’ club.Lined up is the conversion of the former SJ Dixons building into 30 apartments and associated community use, along with five new blocks comprising a total of 42 apartments.Additionally, 21 two- and three-bed houses are proposed. The plans include a total of 93 affordable properties. This application follows two earlier phases of development which regenerated former adjacent sites on Cleveland Road, namely the former bus depot and the former Royal Hospital site.A statement filed with City of Wolverhampton Council on behalf of the applicant said: “The application site has remained vacant for over a decade and this has had a significant impact on the local area. It has created a substantial barrier between All Saints neighbourhood and the city centre.”The proposal is a flagship regeneration scheme with the potential to give a significant boost of confidence to the community and the city.”It is considered the merits of the scheme are entirely positive and there are strong regeneration reasons for the application being supported.”
