Plans have been submitted for the redevelopment of a historic former eye infirmary in Wolverhampton to provide new homes and commercial space.BZ Property Holdings is seeking the go-ahead to transform the site of Wolverhampton and Midland Counties Eye Infirmary on Compton Road. The infirmary originally opened in 1888 and comprises a collection of buildings. It was closed in 2007 when services moved to New Cross Hospital.Plans involve the partial redevelopment of the infirmary for residential use, along with the construction of a new apartment building. In total, the scheme aims to provide 75 one- and two-bedroom properties.Approximately 5,554 sq ft of commercial space is also proposed across two units. The western portion of the site is expected to provide healthcare facilities. An existing nursers home would be restored and converted to allow for the provision of a special educational needs school and eating disorder therapy clinic.A statement filed with City of Wolverhampton Council on behalf of the applicant said: “It is the vision of our BZP Holdings to transform the existing derelict and dilapidated site into a viable, sustainable and functioning piece of the city, which will also contribute positively to the character and life of its immediate neighbourhood.”Where possible, existing heritage assets on the site are to be carefully restored and converted to new sustainable uses. Any new buildings are to be sensitively designed to complement the existing restored historic buildings and enhance the character of The Oaks Conservation Area, within which the site is located.”
