Housing and supermarket scheme set for approval
The proposed construction of more than 300 homes, a discount supermarket and a community hub is set to be given the green light by Wiltshire Council. Two applications from Leda Properties for sites in Wootton Bassett will be considered by the planning committee. The developer is proposing the construction of up to 320 homes, a 5,400 sq ft community hub suitable for a variety of uses and open space on a site at Coped Hall. An extension of a previously consented ‘sports hub’ at the site is also included. The second application covers the development of a 27,000 sq ft supermarket on an area of land to the south of the first scheme. A 33,000 sq ft care homes and 33 senior living units are also proposed for the site. This was originally put forward by Leda in partnership with Tesco. However, the supermarket chain has since pulled out of the project, with Lidl stepping in to develop a store.Wiltshire Council’s strategic planning committee will consider both schemes and a report prepared ahead of the meeting has recommended approval for both. This is subject to the signing of a Section 106 agreement to secure affordable housing provision and contributions to education, highways and public space.Despite the recommendation, 557 objections have been received to the Coped Hall scheme and a further 318 to the supermarket plans.
