HS2 set for Sheffield city centre station
Plans for a high-speed rail station in Meadowhall are reportedly set to be scrapped in favour of a city centre alternative.A HS2 rail link in the city centre is now being explored by the Department for Transport and HS2 Ltd.The move, which would save £768m, avoids the need for expensive engineering work to lay the groundwork for the line to take in Meadowhall.HS2 Ltd chairman Sir David Higgins is expected to make a formal recommendation about the location of the Sheffield station later in summer 2016. The decision about the location of the station will be informed by an understanding of the possible impacts on the potential growth and regeneration benefits and on the wider rail system.
