The installation of a major new bridge in Swansea has been hailed as a landmark moment in the city’s ongoing £1bn regeneration programme. The bridge, for pedestrians and cyclists, will better connect the city centre’s leisure-led transformation and its coastline.Forming part of a “green artery”, the bridge design includes 2,756 laser cut, orgami-inspired shapes and spans six lanes of traffic.Swansea’s city centre was separated from the beach by a road built during reconstruction after the Blitz of World War II.The crossing is designed to serve as both a statement bridge and a visual representation of the work Swansea Council is carrying out to create an urban destination that brings together the best of city living and access to nature.Designed by local artist Marc Rees and the ACME architectural practice, the 49-metre bridge will span six lanes of traffic, acting as a gateway to the city-centre for both pedestrians and cyclists. The installation process took just two hours, with construction having taken place nearby – on the Copr Bay construction site – between April and December 2020.
