Law firm supports major regeneration project

Cardiff law firm Geldards has advised Tirion Group on the £85m regeneration of Newport’s former Whiteheads steelworks, creating a new development of 528 homes with a primary school, neighbourhood centre and community space.One of Wales’ largest regeneration schemes, the Royal Victoria Court development involves the transformation of the brownfield site into open market and affordable housing in Newport.Construction work on the development will start this month and is due for completion in 2025, providing a boost to the local economy by creating 850 new jobs including 40 apprenticeships for local people.Kathryn Gates, Geldards’ Cardiff-based commercial property partner, led the negotiations, advising Tirion Group on the development and disposal of part of the site to partnership housing developer, Lovell. Kathryn was supported by Tomas Philips in the public law team, advising on planning related issues.Geldards and the Tirion Group have a long-standing working relationship, and the commercial property team worked alongside the Tirion Group to realise the development of ‘The Mill’ in Cardiff – a project regenerating and transforming a disused industrial site into a successful sustainable new community of 800 homes.
