Luxury Quayside apartment tower set to create hundreds of jobs in Newcastle
More than 1,500 jobs could be created through a hat-trick of Newcastle housing schemes which include a landmark Quayside apartment scheme.Property developer Adderstone Group is seeking approval for the three large schemes in Gosforth, Ouseburn and the East Quayside, which together represent an investment of £100m.The proposed developments have been welcomed by NE1 Ltd, the city centre Business Improvement District Company. In Gosforth, a planning application has been submitted to build 51 homes on land which was the original Greggs’ Plc headquarters, a site the group acquired in 2012.The scheme, to be known as Christon Park, would see 51 four and five-bedroom family homes on the four-acre brownfield site. The firm said Christon Park has been architecturally designed around a grand crescent and features wildlife corridors and communal “pocket parks”.A public consultation for the proposals was carried out in 2015 at Gosforth Church Hall and scheme plans have been on display in Gosforth Library.Adderstone said feedback, mainly in relation to housing types, traffic management and access, has been factored into the latest proposals.Meanwhile, the business also plans to construct a luxury 122-apartment scheme on the vacant site known as Plot 12 on Newcastle Quayside, the last undeveloped site in that area.Working with planners and Newcastle-based Ryder Architecture, the firm is proposing to build a stepped structure of five towers on the 1.5 acre site, varying between 10 and 16 floors high. The proposals include 122, one to three-bedroom, glass-fronted apartments, all with balconies and spectacular views over the River Tyne.Investment in the landscaping of the existing embankment as well as communal rooftop gardens for residents is also planned. The third planning application is for an eight-storey student residential scheme at the junction of Stoddart Street and Union Street in upper Ouseburn, at the site of the now derelict PTS plumbing building. The 331-bed scheme would be split across 91 studios and 238 cluster flats and include a lounge and games room, laundry, fitness suite, two dinner party rooms, study room, cinema room and outdoor amenity space with picnic tables and cycle stores. The firm said careful consideration has gone into the scheme to ensure it has been designed with the potential to be converted from purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) to a conventional residential scheme at a later date.
