Major arena plans backed by council

Plans to build a 17,000-capacity arena in Filton have been approved by Bristol City Council. The application will now go to the Secretary of State for a final decision.The application by YTL to redevelop Brabazon Hangars at Filton and build a 17,080-capacity arena was given the go-ahead by Bristol City Council’s Development Control Committee A on Wednesday 4 March.Seven councillors voted in favour, two against and one abstained.The floorspace of the three airport hangars will be used to create an arena, exhibition and leisure space under one roof.Planning officers at Bristol City Council recommended the plans for approval.YTL plans to open the doors to the public in early 2023.A separate application to build a new bridge from the former Filton Airfield over the Henbury Loop railway line was also approved.Applications for amendments to the highway servicing the site and a new car park have been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council.
