Matthew Giles to serve up a jewellery box house in Wimbledon
Work is set to start on this new six-bedroom house in Wimbledon Village designed by Matthew Giles Architects and modelled on a jewellery boxConstruction is expected to start before the end of the year on the Red House, which will have an external fabric of tonal red brick alongside a red pigmented concrete. The design of the property is based on the concept of a tiered jewellery box, with living spaces that ‘spin off’ from a central social core. The 715m² house will be built on the footprint of a 1970s home in Lancaster Gardens. Retention and extension of the existing 345 m² property was deemed not to provide the accommodation, nor sustainability and energy efficiency, demanded by the private client. However masonry elements from the 1970s house will be reused to level the site, which will include an ornamental garden designed in collaboration with Juliet Hutt Landscapes & Gardens.Design features include high-specification glazing and insulation, an energy-efficient boiler that will work in tandem with underfloor heating and a mechanically ventilated heat recovery system, planted roofs to support a sustainable drainage strategy, and a rainwater harvesting system.Rear balconies to the master suite will overlook the garden.Matthew Giles is developing the interiors and will use natural materials that respond to the architecture including wood and lime plaster. The project is expected to complete in 2024.Architect Matthew Giles Architects Client Private Building contractor London Projeccts Start on site Winter 2022 Completion 2024 (to be confirmed) Contract type JCT Intermediate Contract Construction cost Confidential Existing GIA 345m² New GIA 715m² Landscape architect Juliet Hutt Landscapes & Gardens Planning consultant MZA Planning Structural engineer Croft Structural Engineers Services engineer OR Consulting Engineers Cost consultant Contra Faba Visuals Matthew Giles Architects On-site energy generation Photovoltaic panels at roof level Overall area-weighted u-value Floor – 0,12, wall- 0.16, roof – 0.18, windows 1.4 Design life years 120+years Dwelling emission rate 5.9 KgCO 2 /m 2 /year.
