Meadowhall expansion receives further backing
A proposed extension to Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield has received the backing of Highways England and a local MP ahead of the city council’s planning and highways committee meeting.British Land’s extension to the shopping centre would consist of a 1.1 million sq ft multi-level extension under a glazed roof known as The Leisure Hall.The new building would add dining and entertainment options as well as internal and external spaces for events and community use.The redeveloped site would also include new restaurants, a cinema to replace the existing cinema, a new café court, gym and additional leisure space to offer new experiences and activities.Highways England has given its backing to the proposals having reached an agreement with British Land on a series of enhancements and upgrades to the road network.Developed with Sheffield City Council and Highways England, the highway improvement strategy additionally includes a comprehensive range of public transport enhancements and initiatives to make Meadowhall more accessible to pedestrians and cyclists and forms part of a £15m package of investments in the area by British Land as part of the delivery of the Leisure Hall.
