More affordable homes planned as details unveiled about exciting Town Hall Campus project

An exciting scheme to transform the historic Waltham Forest Town Hall Campus into a thriving neighbourhood in the heart of Chapel End ward is gathering pace. Plans have been revised to include more affordable homes which will help young people from the borough to stay near their families, friends and support networks as they get on the property ladder.The number of homes the Town Hall Campus project will create across the borough has increased from 348 to at least 500, and up to as many as 600. This will allow the council to provide an absolute minimum of 35 per cent affordable housing, with the ambition to deliver 50 per cent. This is in line with the council’s priority to provide a decent roof over residents’ heads and to improve their life chances.There are a number of revisions to the original plans, first revealed in summer 2017, following community feedback from comments after a series of public events and drop-in sessions. Among these are proposals to work more closely with neighbouring Walthamstow College and create a new Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) facility. The revised plan also safeguards the central fountain and war memorial area of the Town Hall Campus so that it can act as a focal point for events and concerts.Staff from 10 older, less efficient council offices across the borough will move into new office space on the Town Hall Campus site. The land unlocked by this move will then be used for much-needed housing. It also means that the setting of the Grade II-listed Town Hall and Assembly Hall is protected for future generations to enjoy.
