More than 230 canal-side apartments approved in BirminghamPlans for 234 canal-side apartments in Birmingham have been approved unanimously by the city council’s planning committee.Developer Places for People now has the green light to deliver 88 one-beds, 132 two-beds and 14 three-beds across three blocks ranging from four to ten storeys near Icknield Square.Features of the scheme include 2,100 sq ft of commercial floor space, 14 car parking spaces with EV charging points and 270 lockable cycle storage racks.A Section 106 agreement means the development will have an affordable homes provision of 10% which will be equally split between first-home units and shared ownership units, both discounted at 30%.As the land borders the Birmingham Main Line Canal and Icknield Port Loop Canal, work is set for the nearby canal bridge which is Grade II listed.A number of highway improvements will also be carried out such as a redesign of the Icknield Square and Cope Street junctions of the A4540 Ladywood Middleway Junction, to provide a continuous footway and gateway treatment to encourage slower speeds by exiting traffic.
