More time sought for major research and education hub

Plans have been resubmitted for a previously approved new six-storey research and education building at the University of Exeter. The applicant is seeking a longer implementation period after the initial schedule was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.Acting on behalf of the university, planning consultancy Tetra Tech has submitted plans, drawn up by Hopkins Architects Partnership, which relates to a scheme that incorporates a new 400-set auditorium, seminar rooms, labs, research space and other amenities.About 675 jobs will be supported.Office space in the proposed development will predominantly be used by the university’s research institutes. A workshop, computer labs, a study centre, research laboratories, meeting rooms and a restaurant are also planned.An identical application was approved in July last year and, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was intended to implement the scheme within the original three-year period permitted.The pandemic has however interrupted the university’s investment plans and a longer implementation period of five years is sought.
