Multi-million pound scheme to tackle flooding in Egremont
A multi-million pound scheme could protect more than 200 properties in Egremont from flooding. The Environment Agency is launching a project to combat flood risk at Skirting and Whangs Beck.Plans include building three flood storage areas on land at How Bank Farm, near Whangs Beck and on sports pitches at West Lakes Academy and the SASRA social club. These would take excess water from the becks during severe weather. The scheme would see the Environment Agency increase the size of culverts, to allow more water to flow, and improve drainage of surface water. It has been designed to help around 220 residential and commercial properties at risk of flooding. Public consultation was held at the Falcon Club on Monday night, with agency staff on hand to talk to residents about the plans.A full business case for the project will be submitted this month, with a planning application expected to be entered in the first half of 2018. The Environment Agency hopes to start construction in spring/summer 2018 and complete the scheme by autumn 2020.Funding contributions have come from the government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, Copeland Community Fund and housing associations Home Group and Castles and Coasts, whose properties would be protected.Other partners on the project include Cumbria County Council, Copeland Borough Council, West Lakes Academy, the SASRA club and United Utilities. Last month, Skirting Beck overtopped at West Lakes Academy into the sports field and onto the footpath to the rear of Church View. The area has suffered from flooding for over 40 years, with 45 properties affected in 2012.Once work begins, a site office will be set up and residents will be able to speak to Environment Agency staff about any disruptions or traffic management. To receive flood warnings by text, email, or phone, call Floodline on 0345 988 1188 or visit www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings.
