Plans have been unveiled to create a neighbourhood of more than 800 homes on land which is set to be vacated at a hospital site in Birmingham. Many of the services at the City Hospital will be transferred to the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital opening in spring 2024, leaving a portion of the site surplus to the NHS’ needs.Homes England, the government’s housing and regeneration agency, is preparing an outline planning application to regenerate the land. The proposals would provide up to 825 homes and apartments, providing a mix of housing types and sizes to meet housing needs, including for first time buyers, families and downsizers, alongside affordable housing. The proposals will sit alongside the continued provision of healthcare services from the Birmingham Treatment Centre and Eye Hospital and will complement the NHS Trust’s plans for its retained land.Abby Brough, head of planning and enabling at Homes England, said: “Homes England are working closely with partners and local stakeholders to develop a masterplan which benefits the existing community and respects the history of this site.”City Hospital West is entering a new era, and our aim is to ensure that the site continues to play an active role in the local community for generations to come.”We are inviting members of the community to have their say on the plans and help us shape the future of this important space.”A public consultation on the scheme has now launched.
