New homes plan for former mill
A major residential scheme in Middleton could get underway if plans for the site are approved.Applicant Kellen Homes is bidding to gain permission for 330 homes on the former Rex Mill site on land off Don Street.The site previously accommodated the Rex Mill which burnt down in August 2000.The houses which would be a mixture of one, two, three and four-bedroom properties, with 210 market homes and 120 affordable. Car parking for 717 spaces is also proposed along with infrastructure, landscaping and access.Currently the plot is cleared land consisting of trees and shrubbery, with the site bisected horizontally by the River Irk which runs through its heart.The application will be considered at a future meeting of Rochdale Council’s planning and licensing committee.Kellen Homes is also the subject of plans to create a residential destination at a 340,493 sq ft multi-storey mill in Oldham.The site has been snapped up by the property developer for £3.5m and it would be its first such venture outside of Manchester city centre.
