New plans in pipeline for historic former hospital

New plans to build homes and commercial space as well as a £33.4m restoration project on the site of a landmark former hospital in North Wales are to be brought forward.The proposals for the North Wales Hospital, known locally as Denbigh Asylum, have been revealed as part of a scoping opinion submitted to Denbighshire County Council.Up to 300 homes, 12,000 sq ft of commercial space and space for Denbigh Cricket Club are included, all of which will contribute to the cost of restoring the Grade II-listed main building on the site.Development on the site is to contribute £29.4m to the cost of restoring the main building, which will include 26 homes in itself, with between £4m and £6m to come from public funds.The scoping report was prepared by Les Stephan Planning on behalf of Ruthin-based Jones Bros.A previous planning application granted approval for offices, construction training area and a shed to be used as workshop, plant repairs and storage at the hospital.The new development is expected to provide many benefits to the local community through providing jobs and training local people through Jones Bros’ training department.Denbighshire County Council will respond to the application in due course.
