New radiotherapy centre for Swindon’s GWH cancer patients given NHS backing
A new radiotherapy centre to treat cancer patients across Wiltshire and Gloucestershire has been given approval by the Government – but more than £2.5 million is still needed in local fundraising to fill it with equipment.Cancer patients from more than half of Wiltshire and south and east Gloucestershire are currently facing an arduous 100-mile round trip to Oxford every day to undergo radiotherapy. So health chiefs at the Great Western Hospital launched an ambitious plan to build a new radiotherapy unit at the Swindon hospital, to mean patients wouldn’t have to trek to Oxford and back each day.The £2.9 million Specialist Satellite Radiotherapy Unit has now been given the green light by NHS England, and should open its doors by the end of next year.
