A planned scheme to demolish 23 flats in Newport and redevelop the site to provide 43 affordable homes could soon secure approval.Newport City Homes is behind the proposals for two separate parcels of land to the north and south of St John’s Oak Road in Rogerstone. The site has a total area of 2.2 acres with flats on the northern half and the southern half is currently open space having previously been cleared in 2014.Proposed is the demolition of 1-23 Oak Road and redevelopment to provide 43 residential homes. There would be five houses and nine flats on the north site and 29 flats on the south site.Lined up also is landscaping, access, parking and associated works.Newport City Council’s planning committee will consider the application next Wednesday (12 June).A report for the committee said: “The proposed development would provide much needed affordable housing. The scheme has been designed to ensure that trees and open space are retained providing a high standard of visual amenity.”The proposed development would provide a good level of amenity for future occupiers and would not unduly harm the amenities of neighbouring residential properties. On balance, the scheme is acceptable in highway safety terms.”A recommendation has been made for the application to be granted with conditions and subject to a section 106 legal agreement.
