Northern School of Art development approved

Plans for the new Northern School of Art post-16 campus have been approved.The scheme involves the school’s college-level campus relocating from its Acklam base to a purpose-built, three-storey building in the centre of Middlesbrough.Plans for the approximately 60,000 sq ft building, which will be located on the site of the former Denmark Street car park and opposite the BBC studios, include 50 car parking spaces.Designed to house up to 725 students, it will provide a range of arts teaching spaces.With more than 140 years of experience, The Northern School of Art is the only specialist art and design school in the North East, with a further education site in Middlesbrough and a university-level campus in Hartlepool.Seven Architecture is behind the design of the project, with the current Middlesbrough campus continuing to operate until the new site is ready.A report that was scrutinised by Middlesbrough Council planners on Friday 6 March recommended the plans be approved, subject to conditions.
