Office plans for disused water tower on Butt Road, Colchester
A disused water tower could be refurbished and converted into offices after an application was submitted to Colchester Council.Plans for the 19th century octagonal tower tower in Butt Road include a two-storey extension on the east side of the water tower which would be linked by a low, glazed area. The inside, which currently measures 450 sq ft, would then have office space on the ground and first floors.A timber upper floor would have to be removed because it is in a dilapidated state. The water tower is featured on Colchester’s Local List, a register of heritage assests which although unsuitable to be called a Listed Building, are considered historically or architecturally important to the town.Plans have been submitted by applicant David Newton who lives in Nayland.Planning agent David Balcombe said offices had previously been intended for the building when it was owned by developers Taylor Wimpey and some commercial use was required as part of a wider plan for the whole garrison area.
