Plans approved for police and fire station complex

Plans to give the former Allerton police and fire station complex a new lease of life have been backed.The site currently comprises four vacant buildings positioned around a central courtyard. These include the police station, fire station and a pair of semi-detached houses sitting at the head of a small, inward-facing group of properties named The Quadrangle.Built in the 1930s, the main group of assets have a distinctive, civic style.Proposed are a trio of works, with the application having now been backed by Liverpool City Council’s planning committee.The first is converting and extending the former police station building – following the demolition of some single storey elements – into 40 units of sheltered housing accommodation.Elsewhere, the fire station tower, workshops and garage would be demolished, while the main building would be converted into five townhouses.Finally, plans have been drawn up to reinstate former fire station accommodation as a pair of semi-detached houses, returning them back to face the Quadrangle as they were originally intended to do so.
