Plans for a development of almost 60 new homes on the land of an athletic club in Middlesbrough have been recommended for approval despite an objection from Sport England.Developed by GD Designs Architectural Services, outline permission is sought for the relocation of an existing social club to allow for the construction of 58 new residential properties on land at the Acklam Iron and Steel Works Athletic Club. The proposed scheme also includes the installation two football pitches, along with changing facilities for both junior and adult teams. The applicant previously filed proposals for the development of more than 100 properties on the site in 2016. This application was refused by Middlesbrough Council, with the number of homes being reduced as a result. In a report prepared ahead of a meeting later this week, planners have recommended the application is approved. On balance, the development of residential dwellings on this site and the retention of two sports pitches with new changing facilities is said to be acceptable in principle. An objection has been received from Sport England relating to the loss of a sports field and the retention of both pitches on site. The objection from Sport England means the council is required to give the organisation the ability to seek the application being ‘called in’ for the determination of the secretary of state.
