Plans in for 500 homes on former coke plant
Plans have been lodged for a development of up to 500 homes on the site of a former South Yorkshire coke plant.A planning application for the redevelopment of the 40.5-acre former Monckton Coke and Chemical works site has been submitted to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council by Monckton Developments Ltd.The applicant is a joint venture established by the families behind David Hopkinson Ltd and MHH Contracting. The former coke and chemical plant closed its doors in December 2014 and the structures associated with the facility have largely been demolished.A hybrid application has now been submitted seeking full planning permission for remediation works to bring the site back into use, and details of access.Outline approval is sought for up to 500 new homes, as well as about 4,300 sq ft of commercial space. The plans also include a multi-use games area, play area and informal open space. If approved, the development would be completed in phases over a seven-year period. It has been estimated that the economic output of the construction phase would be £11m per annum, with household spending of about £13.8m per annum once the development is complete. It could support 190 temporary jobs per annum during construction and 24 full-time equivalent (FTE) permanent jobs within the commercial development. The project team include Pegasus Group, Met Consultancy Group, Envestigate/Geo2 Ltd, Bright Young Green, Skyline Ecology, Wardell Armstrong, Weddle Landscape Design and LK Group.
