Plans in for new flagship indoor adventure centre

A new flagship indoor adventure centre offering activities such as caving, canyoning, canoeing, deepwater surfing, ice and rock climbing, and zip wiring could soon be created near the Trafford Centre in Manchester under newly submitted plans.International leisure, entertainment and hospitality specialist Urban Legacies has submitted a full planning application to Trafford Council to convert part of the DW Sports & Fitness Centre building next to the Chill Factore ski slope. The scheme involves substantially retaining the existing nine-metre-high building while adding a 17.5-metre-high extension to the rear capable of housing larger internal attractions, giving a gross internal floor space of 124,377 sq ft, according to a supporting planning statement by HOW Planning.The property is currently occupied by a range of leisure users including the DW Fitness Trafford gym, the Oxygen Freejumping trampoline park, and the Powerleague Trafford Sportsdome five-a-side sports facility. Urban Legacies is currently in negotiations with the landlord with a view to taking on a lease for the northern part of the building, which presently comprises a series of football pitches associated with the Powerleague Trafford Sportsdome and supporting facilities, to open its flagship Project Canyon centre in the UK.The Project Canyon concept involves providing a range of active lifestyle experiences aimed at people of all ages and abilities along with ancillary food, drink and merchandising opportunities. The proposed facility off Trafford Way would create up to 325 new full-time and part-time jobs.Trafford Council has set a determination deadline of 8 March 2017 for the proposals.
