Plans have been lodged for the construction of a new specialist day care centre and a number of new bungalows in Sunderland.Submitted by Sunderland City Council and designed by JDDK architects, the plans involve the demolition of the old North East Disabilities Resource Centre (NDRC), replacing it with a new facility, as well as the development of 17 bungalows designed for specific disabilities as part of the mixed-use project.NDRC provides services involving, arts and crafts, cookery, computer skills, drama, gardening, pampering, social outings, games and exercise classes, with it being situated on Cork Street. The residential element of the scheme comprises a mixture of one and two bedroom dwellings, set against the NDRC building, which is at a slightly larger scale but is proportionally broken up to tie in with the bungalow elevations. The residences are 100 per cent affordable housing for rent.Located within the city centre, the site is part of a vacant plot of land allocated for residential development, with the rest being occupied by the existing NDRC building.
