Plans lodged for waste to jet fuel plant
Plans have been lodged for a new plant for the conversion of waste into aviation fuel with the potential to create about 130 permanent jobs.Altalto Immingham, a collaboration between Velocys, British Airways and Shell, has submitted a planning application for a commercial waste to fuel plant near Immingham. The proposed plant would take hundreds of thousands of tonnes of household and commercial solid waste and turn it into clean burning sustainable aviation fuel. It is expected to be Europe’s first commercial scale household and commercial solid waste to sustainable fuels plant. The project is set to bring hundreds of millions of pounds of investment to the Humber Estuary, creating about 130 permanent jobs as well as more during construction. The technology, integrated by Velocys, would enable a net 70 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for each tonne of sustainable jet fuel that displaces a tonne of conventional fuel. The greenhouse gas reductions achieved from the plant’s annual output are equivalent to up to 40,000 standard size petrol engine cars.
