Plans outlined for Liverpool city centre transformation

Plans to transform a site in the heart of Liverpool city centre have been unveiled.The Ropewalks Sustainable Transport Enhancement Package (STEP) scheme is split into two phases; the first concerning Bold Street and Seel Street, and the second involving Wood Street, Fleet Street, Slater Street and Colquitt Street.Funding of £4.5m has been secured for phase one, with £3m from the Local Growth Fund and £1.5m from section 106 funds the city council has collected.As part of these works, the authority is hoping to pedestrianise the full length of Bold Street in a bid to boost the emerging café culture and music scene.Also proposed is installing new and improved seating and lighting, planting trees and improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists.Liverpool City Council is also keen to reverse the one-way traffic system on Seel Street, running from Gradwell Street to Berry Street, and losing Seel Street between Colquitt Street and Slater Street at night.The overarching aim of proposals is to reduce the amount of traffic collisions, improve the connections to and around the city centre, and support and help attract future investment.The Ropewalks scheme is part of Liverpool City Council’s wider £300m Better Roads programme.
