Plans revealed for £35m Citylabs extension

Health innovation campus Citylabs is set to expand again following high levels of demand, with plans being revealed for a £35m development.The site already comprises Citylabs 1.0, with work underway on 2.0 and 3.0. Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP) and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) are now looking to bring forward Citylabs 4.0.Subject to planning approval, the facility will comprise seven floors of office and lab space where research will be translated into healthcare diagnostics and treatments.The 125,000 sq ft extension represents another step forward for the Oxford Road Corridor innovation district, which is one of the largest clinical academic campuses in Europe, generating about £3bn in GVA each year.It will also see sustainability measures being implemented as part of MSP’s commitment to becoming net zero carbon by 2030.Citylabs 2.0, due for completion in late 2020, will be home to global diagnostics company QIAGEN, which will base its European Hub for Diagnostics Development at the campus. Citylabs 3.0 concerns the redevelopment of the Old Saint Mary’s Hospital and adjoining chapel.
