Plans have been lodged for a new research and education facility specialising in neurodegenerative diseases.The University of Sheffield has submitted an application for planning permission and conservation area consent to Sheffield City Council for an extension to the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN).SITraN provides research facilities into neurodegenerative diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s Disease, and is part of the wider Health Faculty.Planning permission is sought for the demolition of the existing buildings on the site – Barber House Annexe and Transport Garages – and construction of a new research and education facility, known as the Faculty of Health Phase 1.The facility would be an extension of the existing SITraN development and be connected via a glazed link.The new building would feature labs and research facilities, teaching space, offices, storage, and social space.Plans also include a biosolar green roof, two disabled car parking spaces, landscaping and a new public footpath.A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: “The proposals will allow for the expansion of the SITraN operations which provide both economic and social benefits.”Economically, the site attracts students, lecturers, and researchers, providing jobs and footfall within Sheffield, and the proposed expansion of this department will assist the Universities continued expansion.”As a facility for the research into neurology and medicine, there are numerous social benefits for the future of treating patients suffering from neurological diseases.”For students, this expansion will provide additional spaces for students to study within a popular department within the University of Sheffield.”
