A prototype plant for the production of hydrogen from ammonia, which is proposed for the site of a former Nottinghamshire power station, has been green lit.JG Pears Property Ltd and Siemens Energy sought planning permission for a scheme at High Marnham Power Station, Newark.High Marnham Power Station was decommissioned in 2003 with the final site clearance undertaken in 2012.The plant is designed to produce hydrogen from ammonia through a process termed ‘cracking’.The project includes plant and equipment such as vessels, pumps, compressors, tanks, valves and control equipment houses. In terms of its operation, the facility will use ammonia to provide 200 kg of hydrogen per day, loaded directly into one 300 kg capacity mobile HGV tube trailer for dispatch. It would produce approximately three tanker loads per week.A design and access statement said: “The investment will see the start of a new ‘greener’ energy source and will support sectors that typically find it difficult to connect to grid electricity, for example construction sites, long-term infrastructure projects, events, film and TV production, transport etc.”The proposed scheme will utilise the brownfield area, evoking its historical use of electricity generation and will allow for the retention of greenfield sites in the area, and subsequently land for agricultural uses.”A report for the committee said: “It is considered that the proposal is consistent with planning policy and that there are no adverse impacts of the development that would outweigh the benefits.”Members voted to approve the scheme, subject to conditions.
