Plans for a shared space project in Belfast, which aims to drive engagement between communities, look set to be backed at a council meeting tomorrow.Proposals will go before Belfast planning committee to construct a two-storey multi-purpose building comprising a main hall – to facilitate three indoor pitches, changing and toilet facilities, kitchens and multi-function rooms. The building, which forms part of the Peace IV Blackmountain Shared Space Project, will offer a range of integrated services and facilities including community space, health and wellbeing and educational links. The scheme is earmarked for the site of the Finlay’s Factory SE on Ballygomartin Road. While the factory building was demolished in the early 2000s, the remains of its concrete sub-floor can be seen at the area.A design and access statement submitted with the application said that the aim of the scheme is to “release the full potential of the currently vacant former factory site”.It added: “The facility will promote sustainable and meaningful engagement between communities divided by significant physical and physiological barriers and act as a catalyst to unlocking the social, environmental and economic potential as a new shared space for Belfast and the wider region.”The exterior of the base will be constructed using photovoltaic panels, and a two car parks, covering a total of 65 parking spaces including accessible spaces, are included in the development. The application will go before Belfast Council on 31 August with a recommendation for approval.
