Student scheme in Bristol set to move forward
A former engineering works and foundry site in Bristol looks set to be redeveloped into a scheme of almost 500 student bed spaces, with approval lined up.An application brought forward to Bristol City Council Malago Road Bristol Ltd includes the construction of three buildings to provide purpose-built student accommodation at the old Pring & St Hill (Plot 1) on Malago Road.A total of 484 student bed spaces are proposed across the three blocks, rising to ten storeys.There would also be vehicular access, disabled parking and servicing arrangements, public realm works and landscaping.Currently, the site is vacant, comprising of hardstanding. However, it was most recently used as a car wash and by a charity providing temporary accommodation for the homeless.Prior to this, it was in longstanding use as an engineering works and foundry owned by Pring and St Hill until its closure in 2003. It was demolished in 2009.Bristol City Council’s Development Control Committee A will consider the application next Wednesday (24 April). Approval has been recommended.A report for the committee added: “The officer view is that principle of purpose-built student accommodation within Bedminster (identified as a Growth and Regeneration Area) is acceptable and the provision of student accommodation is a notable public benefit, which will make a significant contribution to Bristol City Council’s housing land supply.”
