A ‘dilapidated’ three-storey building in Swansea is set to be demolished to make way for apartments and commercial space.Swansea Council has decided that prior approval for the method of demolition and restoration of the 225 High Street is not required.According to planning documents, 225 High Street is a three-storey building of masonry construction and tiled pitch roof that fronts onto High Street. It is estimated to have been built during the 1920/30s.Recently, the adjacent property at 226 High Street has been demolished due to structural stability concerns. The redevelopment of the larger site (225 & 226 High Street) will include ground floor commercial on the High Street and Strand/King Lane frontages. Residential apartments will be above comprising approximately 14/15 residential units at the High Street level and around 18 units at the Strand level. The re-development proposals have not yet been subject to pre-app (or planning permission) but has been subject to presentation to DCfW.The overall area of the development site would be 0.5 acres.Documents said it was recognised that the building is in a “very poor condition and represents a public health and safety risk”.Demolition works are expected to commence at the start of May and complete towards the end of July.
