Swansea hospital building extension lined up
Plans have been lodged for an extension to a hospital building in Swansea.Stride Treglown Ltd has been appointed by Swansea Bay University Health Board to submit a planning application for a new extension on the main building of Singleton Hospital. The health board has identified an urgent need for a dedicated PET-CT unit at Singleton Hospital.Currently, Swansea has no permanent medical imaging infrastructure with which to diagnose and assess patients, who are required to travel to Cardiff to undergo scans upon referral by a doctor. The application said the proposals seek to remedy this situation, while “taking pressure away from existing facilities elsewhere in South Wales”.Proposals involve the erection of a modular PET-CT scanning unit on a currently underused patch of hardstanding in the north-eastern quadrant of Singleton Hospital’s main campus. While the works to install the new unit are expected to be relatively minor – due in part to the modular nature of the new unit – they are part of a larger package of works being carried out under the direction of the health board to improve its built offering and capacity to safeguard the health of the population of the region. This includes the proposed extension to the Day Surgery Unit at Singleton Hospital, and the planned installation of a modular Elective Surgery unit at Neath Port Talbot Hospital.
