Plans to breathe new life into a once much-loved former Derby fish and chip shop could be about to move a step closer.Back in October, Derby City Council granted permission for the old Savoy fish and chip shop, in the Morledge, to be converted into a podiatry clinic with a retail area.Podiatrists are health care professionals who have been trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. However, since permission was granted, the property, which was damaged in blaze in an upstairs flat in 2017, has remained boarded up.But it would seem that the plans for the clinic are very much still alive after another planning application was recently submitted to extend the first floor of property to create extra space. The former chip shop has been derelict for decades. According to the plans, the Savoy fish and chip shop first opened in the 1940s but has been empty for more than 20 years after closing for business in 1997.The clinic plans involve the ground floor and the first floor, the latter of which was once home to the Savoy’s restaurant. The remaining two floors will be turned into a self-contained flat.
