UCB’s Jewellery Quarter campus plans set for nod

University College Birmingham’s (UCB’s) proposals for the second phase of its Jewellery Quarter campus are set to get the green light from city council planners later this week.Buildings at the site on George Street, including the Lodge Cottrell building, have been earmarked for demolition under the plans. They could be replaced by a four-storey education facility providing teaching space, sports facilities, offices and storage over 141,450 sq ft.Known as Charlotte Street Campus, the scheme also includes a 158-space multi-storey car park fronting George Street, while the ground floor will provide exhibition space and a community health facility.UCB submitted the revised application for the site in March, ten months after Insider reported that it had been recommended for approval by Birmingham planning officers. However, a decision was deferred and the university subsequently withdrew the proposal.A statement from UCB said the “main issues” facing the previous scheme were the proposed partial closure of Holland Street and a feature canopy that would have covered the area, which have been excised.The fresh plans have been recommended for the green light ahead of a meeting on Thursday (25 May), with officers stating that the provision of father education facilities in the Jewellery Quarter is “acceptable”.The £26m first phase of UCB’s Jewellery Quarter campus, known as McIntyre House, launched in 2014.
