Veolia signs £1bn contract to build Hoddesdon incinerator
A £1 billion contract has been signed over plans to build an incinerator in Hoddesdon.The 30-year contract between Veolia and Hertfordshire County Council hinges on the proposed facility in Ratty’s Lane securing planning permission.The “energy recovery facility” proposed by Veolia would generate up to 33.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity from 350,000 tonnes of waste each year.It would be fuelled by rubbish that cannot be recycled and currently goes to landfill.It will create more than 300 jobs during construction and 40 permanent jobs once the facility is operational, should it go ahead.Subject to planning permission, the construction work of the energy recovery facility will start in 2017, and will be operational in 2020.
