The Wilton Centre on Teesside is at the heart of a new project which would enable a commonly used plastic to be recycled.Lucite International has well-advanced plans to build a recycling plant in mainland Europe which would be up and running in three years’ time. The project team is using the laboratories and office space at the Wilton Centre near Redcar to develop a circular economy which it is calling molecular recycling. It will take end-of-life acrylic products and reverse the production process to recreate the key raw material Methyl Methacrylate (MMA).At the Wilton Centre, the Lucite project team is using technology developed by its American partner Agilyx to heat end-of-life acrylic causing its chemical bonds to break apart. The resulting crude oil is then purified to form untainted MMA.
