Work is well underway on the second major energy-from-waste plant to be built at Ferrybridge in West Yorkshire, it was confirmed this week, with the facility on track to open in 2019 according to developers. The £300 million facility is being built by Multifuel Energy Ltd (MEL), a joint venture between energy provider SSE and energy-from-waste specialist Wheelabrator Technologies.MEL will operate the plant alongside its existing Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 (FM1) project – which began operations in May 2015.During the development of FM1, MEL said that the level of interest from potential fuel suppliers demonstrated that there was demand in the market for another facility.A spokeswoman for SSE told letsrecycle.com that work on land at Ferrybridge ‘C’ power station in Knottingly began in summer 2016. To date this has included site clearance and the construction of access roads, and the start of works on the fuel bunker.ContractConstruction work is being carried out by SSE in conjunction with Swiss firm Hitachi Zosen Inova which won the EPC contract for the work in June 2016. HZI was also employed as technology provider and general contractor the first Ferrybridge EfW plant.Once complete, the facility will process up to 675,000 tonnes of RDF from municipal and commercial waste sources each year, as well as provide capacity to burn wood according to the Department for Energy & Climate Change (DECC). It will produce an estimated 70MW of electricity for the National Grid.Planning permission for the FM2 plant was granted by the Secretary of State in October 2015.
