Work starts on £45m flood defence scheme

Construction work has started on a £45m flood defence scheme designed to protect homes and businesses in York.Contractors have started preparing to raise and improve flood defences from Westgate Apartments to the Park Inn hotel on North Street.As part of this section of the flood defence scheme, the floodgate under Lendal Bridge will also be increased in height. A site compound has started being constructed on Tanner Row opposite the Maltings pubThe work forms part of the Environment Agency’s £45m York Flood Alleviation Scheme, in partnership with City of York Council, which aims to better protect 2,000 properties across the city by 2021.
