Work to start this year on new Olympic Legacy Park stadium

Scarborough International Property has confirmed work will start later this year on the new Community Stadium as part of the expansion of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park.The company was named as ‘preferred developer’ for the project earlier this year.Scarborough is already under contract with the council to bring forward the Community Stadium, and has secured detailed planning permission.Work will start on the Community Stadium in December 2019, incorporating a 45,000 sq ft mixed-use office and commercial building alongside an initial phase of 750 spectator seats. Permission has been granted for a capacity of up to 3,921 spectators in the completed stadium.The project team includes GMI Construction, Whittam Cox Architects, Arup, Ares Landscape Architects, Burnley Wilson Fish and Zerum. Lambert Smith Hampton will lead the letting and marketing.The commercial space represents Scarborough’s first investment in the project, following on from the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC), The Oasis Academy, and the University Technical College that have been developed by the Legacy Park Limited stakeholders.The group is now developing detailed proposals for the first buildings on the wider park, starting with a cluster adjacent to the Community Stadium and the AWRC, and is designing the wider masterplan extending to an area of about 70 acres.Scarborough has also stated that chairman Kevin McCabe’s ownership of Sheffield United has never been central to its interest in developing Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, and it expected that the women’s team would continue to retain its home at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park Community Stadium.
